About Computer Gripes

Since 2000, documenting the down side of computer stuff. Since 2026, fixing it.

Computer Gripes started in 2000 as a catalogue of what stinks about computer products: hardware, software and web sites, and the bugs, poor documentation and occasional stupidity behind them. Wikipedia, CNET and Slashdot linked to it. The original site was written by a different author and has not been updated since the late 2000s.

In 2026 the domain was relaunched under new ownership by Progressive Media GmbH. The idea stays the same: document the down side of computer stuff honestly. What is new is the fix. Every gripe on the wall now comes with tested steps to solve it, or an honest alternative when the product itself is the problem. None of the original text is reused here.

How we work

We reproduce every problem on a real machine before we write about it. Each guide names the software version it was tested on and the date. Old fixes are retested or retired. There are no ads and no affiliate deals on this site, so nobody pays for a recommendation.

Who writes here

Sven Köstner has worked in IT since 2001 and brings more than two decades of hands-on experience. His focus is operating systems, software and IT security. He explains complex technical topics in a clear, practical way so readers can make informed decisions, whether they are choosing the right software, tuning their systems or protecting themselves against digital threats.
