eProxyGripe, Gripe, Gripe....

eProxy is a web site for proxy voting

March 23, 2002.
There are three options when voting for the board of directors of a company. You can vote for everyone, for no one, or for only some of them.

Instead of a radio button to vote for some nominees, there are a series of checkboxes under the option to vote for nobody. To vote for some of the nominees, you have to both vote for all the nominees and at the same time vote against the people in the checkboxes.

Gripe1: this is much more confusing than necessary. At the very least, couldn't the list of checkboxes for each nominee be under the first radio button?

Gripe2: it leads to an illogical situation. The screen shot shown here shows that a user (me) can vote for nobody and at the same withhold a vote for a single nominee. A user who clicks on any of the checkboxes is supposed to be doing so in conjunction with voting for everyone. Yet the web page design lets a user do this and also vote for no one.

Gripe3: there is no Reset button to clear all the radio buttons and checkboxes in case someone makes a mistake. That would be too simple and clear.

The programmers at eProxy decided to treat this data input as if the user meant to withhold authority from all nominees as shown below.

Fortunately, the Back button on the browser caused a reset on all checkboxes and radio buttons.

FYI: The web site says the votes are tabulated by Mellon Investor Services.
FYI:  Another URL used by eProxy is www.eproxyvote.com
